Daily Struggle with Students

1. The Daily Struggle: The Phone as a Lifeline

For a student without a laptop, a smartphone becomes their entire university campus. They use it to join virtual lectures, read 50-page research documents, and type out long essays.

• The Reality: Typing a 3,000-word term paper on a tiny touchscreen is exhausting.

• The Glitch: Formatting documents on a mobile phone often breaks completely when the professor opens it on a computer, leading to lower grades for errors the student couldn't even see.

• The Toll: Staring at a small screen for up to 8 hours a day leads to severe eye strain, headaches, and physical burnout.

2. The Desperate Search for Access

When phone screens aren't enough, students have to go to extreme lengths just to finish basic homework assignments.

• The Computer Lab Chase: They become the first to arrive and the last to leave the school library, racing to secure an open desktop before they all fill up.

• Internet Cafés: Students who cannot afford a device often spend their food or transport money renting computers by the hour at internet shops.

• Public Displays: Around the world, viral videos have captured students standing outside fast-food restaurants to catch free Wi-Fi, or using display tablets in electronics stores to type out their assignments.

3. Real-Life Examples of Triumph

Despite these immense hurdles, many students show incredible resilience, often relying on the kindness of others or sheer willpower to succeed:

• Samina's Story (India): During the COVID-19 pandemic, Samina attended full-time university classes from 9 AM to 4 PM entirely on her cell phone. The strain caused her severe headaches and physical exhaustion, and her family pressured her to quit and work. Seeing her determination, a former teacher lent her a 7-year-old laptop, allowing her to finish her lectures in peace and graduate.

• Django's Story (Uganda): Studying computer science from the Kyaka II refugee settlement, Django had to survive on erratic electricity and mobile data. A classmate from the University of London, Lex, noticed his struggle via a student Slack channel and shipped him a spare MacBook all the way from Australia. Despite the laptop getting stuck in intense customs bureaucracy, Django traveled to a tax office, cleared the paperwork, and used that computer to transform his education.

• Elvis's Story: A young student named Elvis had no device and could only quietly admire his classmate Bob's laptop. One evening, Bob handed it to him and said, "Take it for the night. Bring it back tomorrow." Elvis stayed up until 3 AM teaching himself design tools, coding tutorials, and software. That single night of access changed his entire life trajectory, opening his eyes to a world of digital opportunity.
